An engagement session is a special occasion for couples, offering a chance to capture the joy and love that marks the period leading up to your wedding. It’s a unique opportunity to create lasting memories and to get comfortable in front of the camera before the big day. These photos not only serve as cherished memories but can also be used for save-the-date cards, wedding websites, and displays at the wedding reception. Preparing for this session is essential to ensure that the photos reflect your personality and love story. Here’s a guide to help you prepare for a successful and enjoyable engagement photo shoot.
1. Choosing the Right Photographer
The first step in preparing for your engagement session is to select a photographer whose style resonates with your vision. Your choice of photographer is crucial. Look for a professional whose style aligns with your vision. Do you prefer candid, natural shots or more posed, artistic images? Review their portfolio, read reviews, and ensure their personality matches yours. A good rapport with your photographer will make the session more relaxed and enjoyable. As a wedding photographer in New York, I would absolutely love to take engagement photos for you before your wedding day. It’s also an opportunity for us to get to know each other so that I do not show up as a stranger on your wedding day.

2. Picking the Perfect Location
If you are looking for recommendations on popular locations in NYC and Long Island, you come to the right place. I have compiled two lists of popular locations for engagement sessions. Please click on the following links to read more:

11 Best Locations on Long Island for Engagement Photos
Besides considering the beauty of the location, please keep in mind that the location of your engagement shoot should also reflect your personalities and your relationship. Consider places that are meaningful to you, such as where you first met, your favorite date spot, or a location that fits the theme of your wedding. Natural settings like beaches, parks, and forests offer beautiful backdrops, but urban settings can also provide a dynamic and modern feel. Many locations require purchasing a photo permit beforehand. Remember to reach out to the location to apply and purchase the photo permit if required.

3. Plan Your Outfits and Shoes
Your outfits should complement each other without being overly matchy-matchy. Choose colors that work well together and fit the location and season. Avoid overly bold patterns that might clash with the background. Comfort is key; select clothing that allows you to move freely and reflects your personal style. If you are going to buy a new outfit for your engagement session, please make sure you have enough time to try it on a few times before the session to make sure you feel comfortable wearing it. Please feel free to wear traditional outfits that represent your culture.
If you are going to wear high heels for your session, please consider bringing a pair of comfortable flats for walking.
If in doubt, please feel free to send me your outfit choices and ask for my suggestions.

4. Professional Hair and Makeup
Consider hiring a professional for hair and makeup. This not only ensures you look your best but also boosts confidence in front of the camera. A trial run before the photo session can help you decide on the look that best suits you. If doing your own styling, opt for a slightly more polished version of your usual look. If you are planning on doing a haircut or dyeing your hair, please remember to do so a few weeks before your engagement session so that you will have time to adjust your hairstyle if needed.

5. Consider a Manicure Before the Session
I would like to take a few close-up shots of the engagement ring on your finger, so it would be a good idea to do a simple manicure before the session. If you don’t like doing a manicure, consider trimming and filing your nails to your liking.

6. Consider Bringing a Flower Bouquet or Meaningful Props
A bouquet with real flowers is always a nice addition to photos. It also helps with hand positions when you don’t know where to put your hands in front of the camera. Bringing a bouquet is highly recommended but totally optional. No faux flowers, please!
Props can add a personal touch to your photos. These could be something as simple as a blanket to sit on, a special item that symbolizes your love, or an instrument you play. Make sure that the props are meaningful to your relationship and don’t overshadow the main focus – the two of you. I don’t recommend bringing balloons or bold signs to the session unless you feel strongly about it. Props are optional as well.

7. Consider Bringing your Pets to the Session
Bringing a pet to an engagement session can add a unique and personal touch to the occasion, capturing the complete picture of your family-to-be. Pets, often considered as family members, can help create relaxed and authentic moments, showcasing your shared love and bond. When including a pet, especially a dog or cat, photographers can capture spontaneous and playful interactions that reflect the your everyday life and love. It’s important to consider the pet’s temperament and how they handle new environments or crowds to ensure they’re comfortable and safe during the session. Additionally, bringing treats or their favorite toy can help keep them engaged and cooperative. With the right planning and a pet-friendly location, having your furry friend join in can make your engagement photos even more special and memorable, creating a heartwarming narrative of your journey together. Please also consider having a helper to take care of your pets during the session.

8. Communicate with Your Photographer
Please feel free to discuss your expectations and any ideas you have. Share any concerns you might have. While it’s not possible to completely change my style, I would love to accommodate any special needs or requests. If you see any photos you like online and would love me to take similar ones, I would be more than happy to do so. It’s also okay if you don’t have any specific idea. I will guide you through the process and provide my own insights during the session.
9. Plan for the Weather
If your session is outdoors, keep an eye on the weather forecast. I’m okay with rescheduling if the weather doesn’t look nice. But if for any reason, the date can’t be rescheduled, have a backup plan in case of rain. Buying two clear umbrellas would be a great idea, or consider an indoor location that you like.

10. Relaxing and Enjoying the Moment
The most important part of an engagement session is to have fun and enjoy the experience with your partner. Trust your photographer, be yourselves, and let your natural chemistry shine through. As I would always say, “Have fun and don’t overthink about the poses. You are doing it right if you are having fun. “
